چکیده

Engineered geothermal systems (EGS) present an opportunity to expand the implementation of geothermal power. There has been some interest in the possible application of CO2 as a heat extraction fluid in these systems instead of water, due to a variety of inherent benefits, including being a nonpolar fluid, low viscosity at the temperatures and pressures within the reservoir and a large buoyancy effect. The buoyancy effect in particular indicates the potential for a simple surface plant design, or “CO2 thermosiphon”. Balancing these advantages, CO2 has some drawbacks, leading to lower thermodynamic performance in the overall system. This is mostly due to a combination of lower heat capacity, and large frictional losses due to gas-phase flows in the production wellbore. Here we explore some of the thermodynamics underlying this characteristic, and explore some scenarios that could be expected to offset it. Ultimately, economic analysis will be necessary to determine in what cases CO2 would be applicable as a geothermal heat extraction fluid. This should give some indication as to which geothermal resources may benefit from the usage of CO2.

Comparative Energy and Exergy Analysis for the Utilization of Alternative Fuels in the Cement Kiln

The cement industry is one of the most energy and carbon-intensive industries. The energy and carbon reduction is an important issue in this industry. The present work considers the use of alternative fuels in the cement kilns. The amounts of excess air, the location of fuel and air entrance, as well as the amount of produced gas stacks, are the main design and operational variables in the kiln...

Energetic and Exergetic Analysis of a Transcritical N2O Refrigeration Cycle with an Expander

Comparative energy and exergy investigations are reported for a transcritical N2O refrigeration cycle with a throttling valve or with an expander when the gas cooler exit temperature varies from 30 to 55 ◦C and the evaporating temperature varies from −40 to 10 ◦C. The system performance is also compared with that of similar cycles using CO2. Results show that the N2O expander cycle exhibits a l...
